T HE F IRST A LL-S TAR G AMEby Jerome Holtzman, OfficialHistorian, MLBIt was in 1933, the year of the Chicago Centennial. The city was strangling in the grip of the Depression. Municipalgovernments were on the brink of bankruptcy, but a remarkablenumber of Chicago businessmen invested for a gala, Century ofProgress, which evolved into the famous Chicago Worlds Fair. EdKelly, then the mayor of Chicago, approached his friend, ColonelBertie McCormick, publisher of the Chicago Tribune, early in 1933.Kelly thought it would be appropriate if a sports event could bearranged as an adjunct to the Chicago Worlds Fair. Weve got the manyou want right here, McCormick replied. And ten minutes laterTribune Sports Editor Arch Ward was in McCormicks office. ColonelMcCormick had some doubts. What if nobody shows up? Ward wascertain he could fill Comiskey Park, the home of the White Sox, andtold the publisher, You can take the losses out of my paycheck. Ifyoure that confident well underwrite it, McCormick said. Six monthslater, baseballs first All-Star Game, matching the best players inthe American and National Leagues, was born. The Game of theCentury, as it was billed, was scheduled for July 6th -- a day wheneastern teams traveled west and vice-versa -- and Comiskey Park waschosen over Wrigley Field by a coin toss. It was played in idealweather and drew a paid crowd of 47,595. Twenty-four future Hall ofFamers comprised the first rosters, but few grasped the magnitudeof the event. Hall of Famer Joe Cronin, the ALs starting shortstop, said 50 years later, Although much is being made today of the factthat we played in the 1933 All-Star Game, we also considered it agreat honor then because we thought it would be the one and onlyAll-Star Game. Appropriately, Babe Ruth hit the first All-Star Gamehome run, a two-run smash that led the American League to a 4-2victory. Thats a grand show, said Commissioner Judge Landis, whoimmediately decreed that the All-Star Game become an annual affair.Dad never thought the game would go beyond one year, recalled TomWard, Archs son. He felt it would be strictly a one-shot thing. Hewas very surprised. Ward picked the managers, Connie Mack of thePhiladelphia Athletics for the AL, John McGraw of the New YorkGiants for the NL. The players were chosen by public ballotconducted by 55 newspapers throughout the country, which relayedtheir tabulations to the Tribune. Tom Littlewood, who wrote Wardsbiography, Arch - A Promoter Not a Poet, revealed that Ward wasntthe first with the idea. As early as 1915, F.C. Lane, the editor ofBaseball Magazine, had made a similar proposal. Lane met with theleague presidents and some of the club owners but failed toconvince them an All-Star Game would be beneficial. ArchibaldBurdette Ward was a non-writing sports editor -- his prose waspedestrian, but he was among the outstanding promoters of his time.He also created the College All-Star Football Game and was thearchitect of the All-America Football Conference, subsequentlyabsorbed by the National Football League. He was born on December27, 1886 in Illinois Kankakee County and was the sports editor ofthe Tribune for 25 years. He died on July 9, 1955 and was buried onthe morning of the 22nd All-Star Game. This season -- 77 yearsafter Arch Ward coordinated the first Major League BaseballAll-Star Game -- the event has grown into a spectacular week ofevents that not only includes the game, but the State Farm Home RunDerby on Gatorade All-Star Workout Day, the XM All-Star FuturesGame, the Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Gameand Major League Baseball All-Star FanFest. Several hundredthousand people will have the opportunity to experience All-StarWeek in Anaheim, while more than 100 million fans around the worldwill tune in or listen to All-Star Week events on television andradio. 10 2010 ALL-STAR GAME

ROSTER L IMITSEach team had 18 players for the first game and 30of them played, although the American League stayed with itsstarting lineup - except for pitching changes - until Sam Westreplaced Babe Ruth defensively in the ninth inning. The standardroster limit was 28 players per team from 1969-1997. The rosterlimit was increased to 30 players per team in 1998 and remainedthat way until 2003, when it was increased to 32 players per team.In 2009, a 33rd roster spot was added for each team to carry anadditional pitcher. In 2010, rosters were expanded from 33 playersto 34, consisting of 21 position players and 13 pitchers.

U MPIRESFrom 1933-1948, each league sent two umpires to theAll-Star Game. Between 1949-1999, three umpires represented eachleague. Beginning with the 2000 Midsummer Classic, six Major LeagueBaseball umpires have worked the game. Lon Warneke, who was namedto five All-Star teams as a pitcher for Philadelphia and St. Louis,is the only player to also appear in an All-Star Game as an umpire(1952).

M EDIA C OVERAGESince the first All-Star Game was looked upon asa one-time affair and some viewed it as a Chicago Tribune event, the inaugural game was not covered extensively by the newspapers. Not all of the Major League teams were even represented by writersfrom their home city, recalled John Carmichael, retired columnistof the Chicago Daily News and press box observer at the first game. For the 2010 All-Star Game, over 2,000 writers, photographers andbroadcasters will be credentialed to accommodate the worldwidecoverage of the event. The first televised baseball game did notoccur until 1939 when the All-Star Game was already six years old.Network coverage of the All-Star Game began in 1950. The 1950 gameat Chicagos Comiskey Park - which was the first extra-inningcontest in All-Star Game history - was covered by NBC with JackBrickhouse announcing. Only three cameras - all black and white -were used. The game was broadcast by 48 stations and was viewed byan estimated 10 million fans. NBC provided continuous coverage ofthe All-Star Game from 1950 to 1975. Beginning in 1976, ABC and NBCalternated coverage, with ABC televising during even-numbered yearsand NBC televising during odd-numbered years. From 1990-1993, CBSprovided exclusive coverage of the All-Star Game. In 1994 and 1995,The Baseball Network -- a joint partnership of ABC, NBC and MajorLeague Baseball -- produced coverage of the Midsummer Classic. From1995-2000, as part of a five-year agreement, NBC Sports broadcastedthe All-Star Game in even-numbered years, while FOX televised theMidsummer Classic in odd-numbered years. This year, FOX Sports willonce again provide exclusive domestic coverage of the 81st All-StarGame. In July 2006, FOX signed a seven-year extension to provideregular season, All-Star Game and postseason coverage of MajorLeague Baseball. As part of the agreement, FOX will provideexclusive coverage of the All-Star Game each season from 2007-2013.Major League Baseball International (MLBI), which works to promotethe worldwide growth of baseball through broadcasting, marketing, sponsorship, licensing and game development initiatives, willindependently produce the world feed in high and standarddefinition. Gary Thorne will join former All-Star Rick Sutcliffe tocall the action in English. Television crews from ESPNInternational (worldwide), Fox Sports International, Fuji TV(Japan) and NHK (Japan) will join the MLBI team on site coveringthe games live. Additionally, news crews from Armed Forces Network(worldwide), Fox Sports (Latin America), Guangdong TV (China) andRogers Sportsnet (Canada) will converge on Anaheim and file reportsfrom the ballpark. Itwas also the first time the All-Star Game was played at night.Unfortunately, many of the most popular names in baseball, including Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams and Johnny Mize, were notpresent because of wartime efforts. It was the only time in the20th century that a New York Yankee would not play in the All-StarGame. In the first inning, Stan Musial, in his first of 24consecutive All-Star Game appearances, knocked in the first run forthe National League. The American League answered back in thesecond inning with a three-run home run from Bobby Doerr beforescoring runs in the third and fifth innings. TheN.L. started the scoring early with two runs off Walt Masterson inthe first inning, but would not be able to push across another runin the game. In the second inning, Walter Hoot Evans hit a home runfor the A.L. in his first All-Star Game plate appearance. In thebottom of the fourth, the A.L. rallied to load the bases before JoeDiMaggio and pitcher Vic Raschi knocked in the three runs to putthe A.L. ahead 5-2 for good. The N.L. tried to keep A.L. hittersoff balance with numerous pitching changes, but the end result wasthe third consecutive victory for the American League. The 1948All-Star Game was the first in which neither team committed anerror during a Midsummer Classic.

1954 M UNICIPAL S TADIUM , C LEVELAND A.L., 11-9The 1954All-Star Game was was the 21st Midsummer Classic and it was thesecond time that the game had taken place in Cleveland. In the bottom of the inning, Larry Doby cameto the plate as a pinch-hitter and delivered a gametying home run.Later in the inning, after the A.L. had loaded the bases, NelsonFox came up with a hit that drove in the winning runs for the A.L.,ending the N.L.s four-game winning streak.
